Frequently Asked Questions
This is a commonly asked question, and for good reason. The software a web design company uses dictates how the site will look, how it will act and how dynamically it will perform.
We use a variety of software depending on the project at hand. As for most general site designs, we use 3 different programs: Web Professional V7, Site Spinner and Coffee Cup HTML Editor. For more elaborate sites, we use Adobe Creative Suite 3, which contains Adobe Dreamweaver CS3, Adobe Flash CS3, Adobe InDesign CS3 and Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop CS3. Occassionally, we will use CMS systems, such as Joomla! and PHP-Nuke. But these CMS systems have their drawbacks and limitations and are generally not suitable for full website creation, so we typically use them only for certain applications such as blogs.
Does the staff write the HTML and Java code themselves?
Another very good question. While we certainly do have the knowledge and ability, typically, due to time constraints, we do not write the complete HTML codes for the websites ourselves. We will overwrite, modify, add to or supplement the codes generated by the site creation programs as needed.
Writing a complete website in HTML ourself is VERY time consuming and can be a very expensive undertaking. In order for us to keep costs down and remain extremely efficient in our production, we rely on our site creation programs to handle the writing of codes. We have hand-picked each program we use based on our experience with it and the ability, reliability and overall rating of the software, so we are confident that each one will correctly write the required HTML codes. To date, we've never had a single HTML issue with any of the design creation software we use. We do write the Java scripts and required HTML snippets ourself. All of the websites we create are written in XHTML with CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) to ensure reliability and compatibility accross different browsers and different systems.
How long will it take you to design my website?
The length of time it will take varies depending on the type of site, the content required, the number of pages, the amount of Java script needed and your specific needs. Ecommerce and in-depth interactivity require more time. Our work load is generally not a big factor, however, at times it could affect the time required for completion.
Once our initial consultation with is you complete and we have all required information, we can generally have a standard 10 page site completed within one week. Certain things dynamic content and Flash will take a bit longer, of course. During our initial consultation, we will have a more accurate timeline for you.
What can I expect during the design process?
During the entire process, we will keep you informed and up-to-date on the progress. We will also visit you (if locally) or contact you at certain stages of the design process to obtain your input and approval on site layout and content. We will remain in touch and involve you with every aspect from start to finish.
How do you feel about Flash-based websites?
This is another very common question. Today, Flash content is more popular than ever. If created and targeted corrently, they can provide a unique level of interaction. BUT... there are significant drawbacks. Flash requires loading time, and the larger the flash file the longer the loading time. And sites that created completely with Flash usually block out certain users due to the painfully slow loading times, like those with dial-up internet access. Another VERY large disadvantage is that not all search engines can accurately read flash content. Thankfully, Google can, as long as the content is error-free.
The bottom line: An "all-Flash" website is a horrible idea and is something that we prefer to not do. Flash menus are also a bad idea. Flash header and embedded content is ok as long as it's keep at a minimum. Yet another drawback to consider is that Flash-designed websites are more time consuming to create and therefore are more costly. To be sure your site is optimized and to keep costs down, we recommend XHTML-based professionally designed sites that are user friendly and accessible to everyone. According to a recent survey, 47% of all internet users are still on a dial-up connection, which provides a maximum of only 56 kbps of speed.
